The EB0 (ZMZ) and EB2 (HMZ) engine

This engine is a 3 cylinder which comes as a 1.0vti or 1.2vti. There are a few variants, the latest being turbocharged and it comes in various different cars, here is a list of the cars we have found to have this engine:

Common issues with this engine

This engine came with a "wet cambelt" meaning the cambelt runs on the inside of the engine submerged in oil. This means the cambelt deteriorates far quicker than a traditional cambelt and needs to be changed more frequently. The change intervals for these cambelts are every 6 years or 60k miles. If left this cambelt will deteriorate and block your oil pickup in your engine and starve the engine of oil, potentially resulting in engine failure.

Here at Peugeotech we offer a wet cambelt replacement service which includes a new cambelt, new cambelt tensioner and roller, we take the sump pan off to clean the oil strainer of any debris, we remove the vvt solenoids to clean their filters of any debris, and finally we do an oil service to ensure any old cambelt debris is out of your engine. This service usually takes us 3 hours.

These engines suffer from misfires for many different reasons, one of them is burnt valves. This means the intake or exhaust valves inside the engine have partially broken allowing combustion chamber gasses to escape, this results in your Peugeot or Citroen running very rough and shaking. This can happen for many reasons, the most common we have found with this engine is carbon buildup not allowing the valves to close fully.

Peugeotech are able to fix this issue by removing the cylinder head to replace the valves, we have fixed many engine misfires doing this. Your engine will receive a new headgasket and head bolts, new valves and fresh coolant. You are also given the option to put a new cambelt on the car at the same time for just the cost of the belt kit since it has to come off to get to the valves. This service usually takes us 6 hours.

Does your Peugeot or Citroen need to be topped up with oil every few weeks? Can't see any oil leaks? This will be due to your oil scraper piston rings going bad. Normal oil consumption for these engines should be roughly 1 litre for every 1000 miles, anything over this and your oil scraper rings are beginning to fail.

Peugeotech offer an engine rebuild service where we will take your engine out, completely strip it down, clean the piston ring grooves of any carbon and fit new piston rings, this will cure your oil consumption problem. This job will usually take us 2 days to complete.

These engines suffer from the Catalytic converters cracking, this can sometimes cause an error code saying "Cat efficiency lost".

Peugeotech can replace your Catalytic converter for you, sometimes we can also fix your original Catalytic converter by welding the cracks up.
